Curriculum
From the time you enter the Aultman Family Medicine Residency Program, you will enjoy hands-on learning experiences as you work directly with the medical specialists who are on staff at Aultman Hospital.
Curriculum starts on July 1st.
The first year residents will enjoy one full block of orientation which includes certifications, procedure training, EHR training, team building activities, and much more.
We utilize a 13 four-week blocks-per-year schedule.

1 block Orientation
1 block Emergency Medicine (at Aultman Hospital) 2 blocks Internal Medicine Inpatient Teaching Service (MTS) 1 block Medical Intensive Care Unit (MTS) 2 blocks Pediatric Inpatient Teaching Service (PTS) (one at Aultman Hospital and one at Akron Children's Hospital) 1 block Surgery 2 blocks Obstetrics 1 block Ambulatory Care 1 block Gynecology 1 block Family Medicine Inpatient Teaching Service (FMS) Office: 1 half-day per week for most rotations Call: 3 blocks of FMS short call (5pm-9pm and 1 weekend 10am-9pm) 2 blocks of MTS call Shifts: 1 block of ER shifts (at Aultman Hospital) 1 block of OB night shift 1 week of night shift on each MTS rotation |

Additional Curriculum
The Aultman Family Medicine curriculum is based on the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Core Educational Guidelines for Family Medicine Residents, the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) program requirements.
All residents and faculty have input into the curriculum, which provides the skills and training needed for family physicians of the future.

Longitudinal Experiences
- Optional experience for PGY-2 and 3 residents (e.g. Migrant Clinic, Planned Parenthood, Emergency Dept., Stark County Health Department)
- Spend 1-2 half days each block at physician's office/location of resident's choosing
Balint Group
- Focus is on the interpersonal and emotional components involved in the practice of medicine
- Builds communication and relationship skills with patients and their families, other residents, faculty and staff
- Held once a month with the behavioral scientist and the Director of Medical Education
Practice Management
- 4 week rotation to prepare residents to organize their own practices
- Provides background in managed care organizations, risk management, marketing, contracts, malpractice insurance and financial planning
- Conferences are also held throughout the three years
Conferences
- Scheduled daily on topics relevant to Family Medicine
- Faculty and residents are involved in selecting both topics and speakers
- Weekly joint conferences with Internal Medicine
- Include didactics, case presentations and group discussions
- Residents evaluate conferences for content, appropriateness and presentation
- Required resident presentations (PGY-2 and PGY-3)
